Sunny Skate Series: A New Skate Festival With High Ambitions
A brand new Skateboarding Festival is coming to the Sunshine Coast. With ambitions set high this festival aims to attract riders from all over the nation and beyond for 3 days of street and bowl competitions, live music, food trucks and festival vibes on the foreshore of Alexandra Headland. Not just once, but four times every year. Here at Slabzoo we were intrigued to find out more about this new event so we hit up event creator Mat Chigwidden for an interview.
GIRLS SHRED SUNNY COAST
A KOVE CREATIVE X SLABZOO COLLAB: The girls’ skate scene sure is thriving on the Sunshine Coast and the regular girls nights at the local skateparks answer for part of the success - the ‘girls only’ skate sessions create a safe and welcoming environment for female skaters of all ages and levels. The Slabzoo team joined forces with Kristen from Kove Creative, who brought her camera to document the supportive vibe and true love of skateboarding amongst the keen female skaters.
NEW DICKY BEACH SKATE PARK IS OPEN
The much anticipated Dicky Beach Skatepark in Caloundra is open - ahead of schedule. Grinds on pool coping mixed over breaking waves is the new soundtrack for this legendary beach spot. We checked in on Sunday afternoon where skaters, roller skaters, families and friends brought the new skatepark to life.
SLABZOO SHREDDER: ZACH RILEY
This young man is part of the dynamic duo behind Paddo Wax, a thriving local skate wax business (get your hands on their products at the counter of Parliament Skateshop). As if being a successful entrepreneur isn’t enough, he is also a pretty decent skateboarder himself. Zach Riley is our new Slabzoo Shredder.
SLABZOO SHREDDER: BEAU WATERSON
This 7-year-old Sunny Coast skater has street written all over him. What his friends would say about him? “LOVE” he states. Street & Love — need we say more? He rides a tiny little 7” board that allows him to pop BS 180s with ease. He hits ledges, rails and stairs until his pants are ripped! Beau Waterson is our new Slabzoo Shredder.
SHREDDER OF THE WEEK: Tully Burke
You know a skater rips when the whole park will stop and watch him skate. This is what happens when 12-year old Tully Burke is tearing up the bowl at Alex Headlands in the Sunny Coast! Tully is all about passing on the love of skating. He loves helping kids learn to skate is often helping out at lessons or school holiday programs. What a young legend. Tully Burke is Slabzoo's Shredder of The Week!
BANGERS ALL AROUND AT CHIGGY’S BBQ SKATE JAM
Bangers on the BBQ and bangers thrown on the ramps at Chiggy’s BBQ Skate Jam Night on Thursday night. About 35 skaters - from groms, dads, masters skaters, and female rippers - were having a sweet session! Our very own Slabzoo staff photographer, Mark hit the Sunny Coast to capture the action and feel the vibe.
SHREDDER OF THE WEEK: NICO LOUBER
Who is this kid? He arrives at Bracken Ridge skatepark and completely rips it apart. Fakie shuvits, 5050 grinds, fakie bigspins, backside crooks, huge gaps and what-not! With a can-do attitude and a huge smile on his face this kid is going skateboard places. His name is Nico Louber, he is 7-years-old and is this week’s shredder on Slabzoo.
SHREDDER OF THE WEEK: JACK ANGELL
He loves the endless possibilities of skating and you can tell from his style. There is no doubt, Jack Angell has developed into quite a stylish street and park skater. You can always find him at his local Aura Skatepark on the Sunshine Coast - Jack is often the first to arrive at the park and usually last to leave when lights are out. Young Jack is our latest shredder of the week.
