THE KIDS ARE COMING TO BOWLZILLA 2021

BOWLZILLA. Each Friday the kids from Level Up practice their bowl skills at Elanora and a bunch of them are competing in BOWLZILLA 2021. We went down the coast to experience just how much effort these young skaters put into their training before a big contest like BOWLZILLA. Unfortunately, Queensland happened and the Elanora bowl was full of water - luckily Level Up has a state of the art indoor skatepark in the suburb next door. Easy! Kids, coach and Slabzoo team ventured to Currumbin for a fun Friday night of skating and shenanigans at Level Up. See photos and (seriously funny) interviews from the night here.

Some kids spend their Friday nights in front of the TV with a bowl of lollies in front of them. The kids in Level Up’s Friday Elanora lessons are different. They prefer to drop into bowls, do rad tricks and air out in style.

Tully, Zen & Jake are all going to compete in BOWLZILLA 2021.

Interview with Trevor Ward

A bunch of groms from Level Up are going to BOWLZILLA 2021. Trev Ward coaches them and gives us an insight of his approach.

Trevor Ward is the man behind these kids. He teaches them tricks in the skatepark but he’s equally their mentor and friend. As he says, “you need to build up a relationship with the kids and gain their trust to be able to teach them anything out there”.

And the kids do trust him. If he says “do a 540” they say “frontside or backside?”

In his own words, Trevor Ward was once a B-grade pro but there’s nothing B-grade about the way he prepares these kids for BOWLZILLA.

There is no doubt that this bunch of kids are well prepared and they are super excited to show the skateboard community what they have been working so hard on the past year.

And that’s what BOWLZILLA can. It’s a great opportunity for these kids to try a real pro/am contest and it brings everyone together. Kids, amateurs and pros all support each other and have a damn good time.

“It’s about everyone getting behind it and making skateboarding better for everybody.”
— Trevor Ward, coach Level Up

Jacob Hanson 9 went in BOWLZILLA for the first time last year where he managed to crash into another skater in the bowl. Not the kind of first performance you’d dream of. However, Jacob is a fighter and instead of getting intimidated he got hungry for more. Hungry to get back in there and prove himself. This year he’s airing out of the bowl and might even try to do a McTwist.

Like Jacob, some of the kids have competed in BOWLZILLA before while others, such as Sailor Allen and Kruz Lovett, are giving the huge national contest their very first go. Yet all of them have one thing in common - they are absolute shredders!

We can’t wait to see them rip that Elanora bowl and wish them all the best at BOWLZILLA 2021.
