RUMBLE Bowl Riding Championships 2022: RESULTS, RECAP & PHOTOS
RUMBLE 2022: 12 months isn’t a long time but in skateboarding the difference in talent from the 2021 Moneybowl comp is light years! And with the rise in talent this year’s Bowl Riding Championships lead up has been one of the most heated warm ups in Rumble history. On Friday 23 September the much anticipated battles finally went down - and they did not disappoint.
9 & Unders
Ruth Hojgard kicked things off in the under 9 females division final with a near flawless run which was quickly answered back by Lulu Russell’s action packed first run. Georgia Winn’s free flowing use of the Sugar Bowl and solid grinds put the competitors on notice that this was not going to be an easy final. Ruth’s giant backside air and Lulu’s rock’n’roll sent the crowd wild and dark horse Freya Brown showed promising consistency but Georgia’s consistent high line and speed grinds were the difference.
The boys’ side of the division was a battle of speed lines and bigs airs. Deekan Day’s technical lip and coping tricks set the bar but weren’t enough to deal with Hudson Birss’ electric speed and airs he sent to the moon! A special mention to 4 year old micro grom Hunter Brown, dropping in the deep end that’s almost 6 times his size!
12 & Unders
The girls kicked off the under 12’s division in the blazing North Qld heat with a bit of heat of their own. Mia Kretzer’s dominant performance was pushed right to the limit in the last run by Mikayla Sheppard who threw down at the end but Mia’s ability in the deep set her apart from the field. A definite one to watch in the future!
The 12 boys’ final was a level above, literally. CJ Hawker, Caylen Goldsborough and Huddy Walker all set the place on fire. Caylen, holder of one of the most stylish stalefishes, broke the ceiling with an array of massive airs and looked destined to win before Huddy dropped his frontside 540 to steal it at the death.
15 & Unders
The 15’s girls were off to a flyer with Coco Crafter getting inverted in the deep, Eliza Pols and Asha Ledingham tried to answer with stylish second runs, but the dominant Coco left all in her wake with her tricks above the coping.
The 15’s boys almost had the wind taken out of it with the unfortunate departure of Harvey Campbell, definitely a favourite to win on his day. We all can’t wait to see you back Harvey! Now with only 3 competitors left it was a matter of places between Zen Dickson, Taj Wolfenden and micro phenomenon Louie Daiguchi.
Louie’s insane bag of tricks and ability to have his feet glued to his board made hard work for his fellow competitors but Taj, with a majority of the crowd willing him on, dropped an insane last run to try and snatch victory from Louie but came up 2 points short. The start of a budding rivalry maybe.
Master’s
Every year the Master’s defy old Father Time and push their limits in a 10 minute jam of absolute fun and fury! Gold Coast trio of Trev Ward, Craig Thatcher and Chris Enright going blow for blow with the ever stylish Chris gunning for the win three years running. The old pro Trev blasted in the deep and showed glimpses of years gone by with Craig Thatcher rediscovering his form after a long injury spell.
Women’s
It was then time for our blue ribboned events with the Women’s battle set under the bright lights. Event favourite Arisa Trew was the one to beat with team mate Jada Ward and stalwart Taniah Meyers looking the most likely threats. Jada’s skating maturing at each event pushed Arisa to the limit which left the door open and crowd favourite “T” stole the show and the win with her final run to send her legion of fans crazy.
With Taniah bringing the house down the scene was set for probably the most stacked open mens final this event has ever seen.
Open’s
The battle of the young guns Lukas Byers, Freddie Arnold, Logan Graff , Freddie Hazelton, Charlie Holland and Jake Thatcher joined by journeyman Shaun Boucher and transition monster Ethan Copeland. The skies of Mackay were set alight and maybe one or two satellites were destroyed when Logan, Mr Hazelton and Ethan went into orbit. A giant nose grab 540 and lofty stalefish were only the beginning of what Ethan put down before locking it down with some very stylish lip tricks.
In an almost carbon copy of last year all seemed done until Mr. Freddie Arnold stepped up and dismantled every inch of the bowl with a 540, kick flip Indi and invert to name a few of his tricks. He seemed destined to finally grab the victory from good friend Jake Thatcher and Ethan but was denied yet again.
A final that could have gone either way it seemed fitting that it was won by the skater that everyone wanted to watch, Ethan Copeland.
