RUMBLE 2022 Street Finals: RESULTS, RECAP & PHOTOS

RUMBLE 2022: On Saturday 24 September the finals for the Daly Bay Rumble Street Championships 2022 set the Sugar Bowl Skatepark’s street course on fire, backed by the scorching North Queensland midday sun. The skaters braved the heat and threw down runs and best tricks like their lives depended on it and in the end we saw a battle for the ages and a real changing of the guard.

9 & Unders

The Rumble On The Reef 2022 street finals kicked off with a slight bit of heat relief from passing clouds, yet the heat soon rose when the 9 boys took to the park. Jude Buchanan took the early lead which he increased with his second run, Beau Waterson a definite crowd favourite lit things up with his second leaving the stage set for the championship last round. Arne Hojgard decided that if there was ever a time to send it down the 9 stair it was now… first go, first try! But it was the ice cold Deekan Day who stole victory on his last run over Jude and Beau respectively.

The 9 girls turned it up a little more with some impressive use of the park, Lulu Russell got the crowd worked up with her infectious stoke, Ruth Hojgard looked like a seasoned pro stomping a pair of safe numbers before throwing all to the wind in her final run but once again it was West Australian local Mia Kretzer who stole the show by bringing her transition skills to the street.

12 & Unders

The next group of female shredders headed out in what was going to be an interesting battle between transition prodigy Arisa Trew and street princess Abby McMahon. Arisa gave the first blow with a solid run which was answered back by Ella Ledingham, Miss McMahon had the run to take the win but couldn’t link a full run and had to settle for 3rd.

What do we say about the 12 boys but - WOW! How are these kids 12 and under?

The finals line up would have been worthy of taking on the open men in their own right. Mike Lui’s tech wizardry got the nod over the ever steezy Eli Waterson who’s kicky front board sent the crowd into over drive. 3rd place was taken by electric Brazilian Zion Furegato.

15 & Unders

With a hard act to follow the 15 girls set their own pace with Jada Ward and Asha Ledingham dropping identical first run scores but Fern Elliott’s answer was the score that took the win in the end. Jada taking second place with her last run.

After the short break and the beginning of the live broadcast the 15 boys took to the park with gusto. After losing Lukas Byers in the warm up to injury Bondi Smith dropped a hammer on the field but if thought it was going to be a cake walk he was mistaken. Tasman Cahill answered back first followed by Jonny Hill with all competitors getting heavy on the rail game. The championship round was the defining moment of the final with Johnny and Bohdi both improving scores with Bohdi keeping a grip on first place.

Open Women’s

Open Women’s kicked off the start of the 2/5/3 finals format, 2 full runs and 5 best trick with your 3 highest scores combined for your total.
This year’s bowl champion Taniah Meyers kicked things off with a solid first run followed up by Felicity Turner and Chloe Covells response. Run 2 saw Haylie Powell enter the fray with Chloe and Felicity adding keepers to the total. Entering the best trick section all the girls got really creative but it was the heavy hitters from Chloe, Felicity and Haylie that set them upon the podium respectively. The level of talent these young women have has Australian skateboarding in good stead.

Open Men’s

Then finally on to the mens, with the heat sapping the energy out of the crowd you could be forgiven to think the start was a bit dull, this was soon turned upside down when Noah Bowden dropped a couple of hammers in his first run. With the crowd now primed Danno Wooley and Rome Collyer stamped their authority on the 2022 Rumble on the Reef street finals.

The best trick section was a nail biter with any of the 8 capable of winning the title with their arsenal. With scores seesawing between Rome, Danno and Hamed, Danny “The Wizard” Campbell summoned his magician like skills to jump into a podium spot in 3rd with his last two scores. He was joined by the ever phenomenal Danno Woolley in 2nd leaving Rome Collyer to claim his first Rumble on the Reef title. A battle for the ages and a real changing of the guard.

Master’s

Like the Bowl Masters, the Street Master’s was a repeat for Michael Harris Walker aka Bruiser. Bruiser’s broken body this year only had to deal with one other competitor in Chris Enright.
