RUMBLE 2021 FINALS: Results, recap & photos
RUMBLE ON THE REEF: On Saturday 25 September the 2021 ASF National Street Champions were crowned after a spectacular night of skateboarding by some of Australia’s best skateboarders, juniors through to Women’s and Open’s. Favourites impressed, underdogs surprised and the vibing crowd created the perfect street final atmosphere in Mackay’s Sugar Bowl.
As the sun set over Sugar Bowl’s street area, the 12 & under girl’s final began with a bang. The girls were all in it to win it, yet in the end it came down to a battle between Arisa Trew, Tanisha Gardner and Abby Rose McMahon. While the nerves played tricks on several of the girls in the final, Abby Rose kept her cool and with strong runs, kickflip fakie and pop-shuvits in her best tricks she took the win in front of Tanisha and Arisa.
Adelaide prodigy Bohdi Smith came, saw and conquered in the 12 & under boys division. His two runs set him apart from the rest of the boys leading into the best 5 tricks. While Brisbane’s young street prince Tristan Moffat and all-rounder Jake Thatcher did what they could to stomp high scoring tricks, Bohdi locked in his victory with a stylish feeble grind on the 9-stair rail, leaving Tristan with a well-deserved 2nd. and Jake Thatcher adding to his Rumble medal count with a 3rd.
The 16 & under division turned out just as exciting as expected. It was a relief to see Lukas Byers return to the scene after his dramatic fall on Friday night in the bowl. He came for redemption and he got it! After a close Sunshine Coast battle for top three Lukas won by a mere 0.67 in front of Kaedyn Collins in 2nd. followed by Maddox O’Reilly in 3rd.
The Women’s division was small but sweet - and tough as! The 5 women supported each other but were definitely there to show Australia that female skateboarding is progressing rapidly. Haylie Powell has struggled with a long run of injuries with a tough 8 months leading up to Rumble. It was good to see her back in action and her solid runs and tricks landed her a clear 2nd. place. 11-year-old Chloe Covell’s rail game was convincingly strong and she can call herself ASF Street Champion 2021. Blayze Harmer stepped up her game big time from last year and took 3rd. Tora Waldren always brings support to her peers and proper cool tricks to the comp, this year was no exception, and Taniah Meyers deserves the medal for most entertaining tricks, for sure.
Gold Coast’s Dani Campbell impressed in the Open’s as he skated to his usual technical standard and delivered runs and tricks that woved both crowd and judges. Yet, hot favourite Tommy Fynn was too strong and proved what it takes to skate at pro level as his experience kicked in from the word go and he once again took the win in Mackay, 15.35 points in front of Dani in 2nd. with Nixen Osborne stepping it up on the rails and bringing in 3rd.
Congratulations to all winners and participants!
And that concludes a great week of Rumble on the Reef 2021 in Mackay - we hope to see you all again next year.
