FEATURE BY | Dain and Jules from BOWLZILLA 2023

Slabzoo is keen to present this Bowlzilla Feature put together by photographer Dain Bosworth & Writer Jules Anethema Swan.

“Feature by…” is Slabzoo’s space for creative content creators to showcase their work and develop their talent within the skateboarding scene.

It’s the Gold Coast Skaters’ favourite time of the year, BOWLZILLA!

I’ve got to say I’m a relatively new member of the skate community and it is amazing. BOWLZILLA really does promote everything that is awesome about the sport. It gives skaters the chance to show off their wicked moves and gravity defying aerials, proving that skating is not just a weekend pastime, but a sport that requires dedication and has become an art form within the sporting arena.

One of BOWLZILLAS mottos is “we are run by skaters for skaters”, this could be seen throughout the day - the cheering, camaraderie , older skaters interacting with the young “groms” congratulating them. The air was alive with positive vibes and insane tricks.

With sponsors and promoters present looking for new and up and coming talent to support.

This year was the eighth annual competition here on the Gold Coast and it felt like a huge family picnic, a gathering of families and friends, food trucks, music, laughter and bowl ripping skate activity (and formed part of The Australian Skateboarding Federation National Park Skating Championships).

With divisions for under 16’s, male, female and masters, prize money on offertory winners, and chances to be hooked up with sponsorship.

The talent on display was INSANE! With the youngest competitor being Hunter Brown who at the age of 4 has already been skating for just over a year!

A more fearless rider I’ve yet to see! And was joined in the competition by his two sisters Myra 6, and Freya 9, who showed the same determination and fearlessness he did.

It was great to see a lot of young skate teams out shredding up the bowl including the Girls from Level Up in Currumbin, The Girls Skate Team, Pathway Skateboarding, and Sloath Skateboarding.

A huge shout out to

  • Alex Henderson from Kingswood Skateboards from the Sunshine Coast, who had free merch on hand for the groms.

  • The event organisers for putting together such a wicked event that promotes the sport of skating in such a positive way to the community.

  • The sponsors, security staff who make these free family community events possible.

  • To everyone who captured our skilled skaters and their kick arse moves and pops.

And to everyone who attended, you are all freakin amazing.
