Road to Paris: 15 Australians competing in Olympic Qualifier in Argentina

Road to Paris ‘24: 15 Australian Park skateboarders have packed their bags and have headed to San Juan, Argentina for the next leg of the World Skate Tour, continuing their journey towards qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Over 60 skaters in total will compete at Skatepark Pocito from May 21 to 28. Slabzoo is here with info on who, how and where to watch when our Ausssie favorites rip it up overseas.

SKATEBOARDING IN THE LAND OF TANGO

On the Australian men's team are Keegan Palmer, the Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo 2020, and Kieran Woolley, previous X Games winner and all around hype man. They will be joined by a talented lineup that includes Ash Wilcomes, Keefer Wilson, Ethan Copeland, Phoenix Sinnerton, Marley Rae, and Dylan Donnini, all of whom represented Australia at the World Championships.

On the women's side, alongside Ruby Trew and Arisa Trew, who performed impressively in previous competitions, Tokyo Olympian Poppy Olsen will be part of the team. Charlotte Heath, Taniah Meyers, Aaliyah Wilson, and Zahra Johns, who have all represented Australia at the World Championships, will also be competing.

They will all compete to increase chances to compete inn Paris in 2024, but there are also cash to be won. A total of $200,000 USD will be split equally between men and women. Winners will take home USD $40,000 each, second place will earn $20,000 and $15,000 for third.

The San Juan Park World Skate Tour in Argentina will kick off with official practice sessions on May 21, followed by qualifiers on May 24, and concluding with the finals on May 28. See full schedule and links to watch below.

PARIS 2024: THE NUMBERS

A total of 88 athletes will participate in the skateboarding competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Each event, including men's and women's street and men's and women's park, will have 22 athletes competing, which is eight more in total compared to the Tokyo Olympics. France, as the host country, will receive four quotas, one for men and one for women in each event. The Tripartite Commission of the International Olympic Committee will decide on the Universality Places, which will also be allocated to four athletes. The remaining 80 quota places will be distributed based on competitions leading up to the Games, with a maximum of 12 quota places per National Olympic Committee, three for men and three for women in each event.
