DICKY BEACH COMMUNITY DAY 2021: RECAP, PHOTOS & RESULTS

DICKY BEACH: A tanned Sunny Coast crowd, a feast of street and transition skating, and a storm that held it together until the last trick was traded in for cash. Dicky Beach Community Day on 30 October 2021 sure brought the park to life and left the community wanting more!

RECAP

COMMUNITY MORNING

The morning kicked off with skateboard lessons run by Skate Aid. Despite their young age, coaches Tully and Baxter Burke taught the younger kids with confidence and support and their stoke was infectious on the young grommies.

MC Fisher from Skate Aid blasted through the speakers as he threw knuckles and smiles to everyone around him.

Before the serious competitive part of the day started, Abby Shanahan got to CUT A RIBBON and officially open the park to the community.

12 & UNDER

The competition kicked off with the 12 & under who had 2 x 45 sec. runs to destroy the course with flow, creativity and technique - and impress the heavy bangers behind the judging table: Theo George, Sammy Fullwood and Shari Duffy.

We saw winner Noa Barnes fly through the park showing creative ways in both street and transition skating. Flip tricks, rails and high airs from the street section to the bowl - only to continue with even more power - leaving everyone a bit gobsmacked.

Jaxon Passey let us know who owned the rails and got in second while Phoenix Andreasson came third. He continues to impress everyone who watches his progress. Technical wizard Eli Waterson missed out on a place - but it’s fair to say he won a lot of respect and a massive group hug with his feeble grinds and a clean as nollie heel.

16 & UNDER

The 16 & under comp saw some heavy hitters in Taj Boyle and Lukas Byers. The surprise of the day was Jack Meek who skated at his best with a clean tre up the euro, a massive fly out and won the hearts of the crowd with his butt shuv to finish his first run. Who said creativity? He placed second after Taj and left Lukas with a heart of bronze.

FEMALE DIVISION

The female division shook up the format and we saw tandem skaters (the stoke was real), dad-daughter teams, Shari Duffy the skating judge having a roll and of course some rippers who just wanted to destroy the course on their own.

Local Abby Shanahan stepped it up and flew through the course with an array of street and transition skating which brought her home a first. Ellie Burrows and Mikayla Sheppard came second and third with solid kickflips, boardslides and did we see a few blunts in there too?

THE BOWL JAM

The bowl jam went ballistic from the get-go with a packed line-up ready to roll in and swop tricks for cash with a no-mercy attitude.

As the sky turned darker and darker the bowl suddenly lit up as the infamous DISCO MAN rolled up and let everyone know who owns the show. During the jam the audience held their breath as Aaron Smith relentlessly set up for a massive FS air taking so many slams in the process. And magically…. as the first drop of rain hit the bowl he finally stuck it and rolled away with the title as the skater with the best sense of suspense and timing.

Congratulations to all winners and participants - and a huge thank you to the Save Dicky Skate Park crew and all partners and supports of Dicky Beach Community Day 2021.
